O tratamento abortivo é aquele que busca tratar a dor no instante que surge. Como a dor costuma ser extremamente forte, analgésicos simples como dipirona, paracetamol e afins não fazem cócegas!
Geralmente são usados codeína, tramadol e até mesmo morfina, mas é muito comum precisar ir ao pronto socorro para poder obter melhora da crise.
Evitar as dores é fundamental no tratamento. A profilaxia se dá através de vários medicamentos, também utilizados em outras doenças neurológicas, como anticonvulsivos (carbamazepina, gabapentina, fenitoína, pregabalina); antidepressivos (amitriptilina, nortriptilina), e também toxina botulínica (botox/dysport).
Como muitas são as origens possíveis, deve-se investigar e tratar sempre que encontrada.
Conflitos neurovasculares e tumores geralmente são resolvidos com abordagem cirúrgica. Esclerose múltipla e outras doenças desmielinizantes possuem também tratamento específico.
